From July 20th 1898...

Mustadfors Bruk is one of the world's main manufacturers of Horseshoe Nails. The company has 60 employees and many of them have been with the company for more than 25 years. The factory is situated beautifully by Dalsland Canal.

The Norwegian company O. Mustad & Son purchased in july 1898 the small semi-island Katrineholm. Katrineholm was at that time the smallest iron-mill in Dalsland. 1899 the horseshoe nail factory was being built and the production started the very same year.  In the beginning of 1900 the company employed about 450 people, causing some social problems.   Flats for the employees had to be built, school, firestation, alimentary store etc.etc. had to be arranged for. The company took the responsability for all this and managed to create a complete society which was named Mustadfors after the founder of the company, Johan Mustad.
In 1907 Mustadfors Bruk produced about 4.000 tons of Horseshoe Nails. Most of the production was sold abroad to Germany,

England and some other countries. In 1916 the production had raised to almost 8.000 tons. The nails were transported by boat on the Canal to the harbour in Gothenburg. In 1927 the railroad reached Dalsland why the trasportation changed from boat to train. In 1930 there was a big fire that ruined many of the 30 year old tree-buildings. The factory was later rebuilt in stone and concrete.

After the second world war the demand for nails started to decrease meaning very little technical development and very small investments in Mustadfors for a long period of time. However, as the interest for horsebackriding and other horse-sports began to grow, the demand for nails increased again. So in the 1970ies Mustadfors started a huge project modernizing the machines and the production facilities.

Today we have a completely modern factory using the original machines as well as new computorized machines.
